Atomic absorption

The method of atomic absorption is characterized by an operating principle and method of analysis that provides relatively simple measurements with high accuracy. The method is widely used in analysis of minute quantities of metallic elements. A special-element hollow cathode lamp for each element to be analyzed is used to irradiate a sample, which is first atomized into a gas. A photomultiplier tube (PMT) then detects the light passing through the sample in order to measure the amount of energy absorbed. Absorption is determined by comparing measured values to a pre-measured reference sample.

The range of applications of this analytical method is extremely wide. It is used in petrochemical analysis, metallurgy, clinical and forensic medicine, mining, geology, public health, food and agricultural chemistry, and even in areas such as environmental protection.
